Curated threat almanac

Read the zombie action before the armor.

A focused 14-zombie index for target priority: sun theft, torches, linked formations, thrown Imps, parrots, armor, and boss pressure.

14 zombies
Basic Zombie game art
Low threat

Basic Zombie

Front Yard

A plain lane walker with no armor or special action.

Counter: Use it to build economy: one early burst plant or a modest shooter is usually enough.

Conehead Zombie game art
Medium threat

Conehead Zombie

Front Yard

The cone adds a second layer of durability before the basic zombie is exposed.

Counter: Start steady damage earlier or combine a blocker with focused lane fire.

Buckethead Zombie game art
High threat

Buckethead Zombie

Front Yard

Heavy bucket armor absorbs substantially more punishment than a cone.

Counter: Reserve burst damage, Plant Food, or concentrated attackers for the lane instead of spreading damage thin.

Mummy Zombie game art
Low threat

Mummy Zombie

Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt's standard walker and the baseline for its themed variants.

Counter: Keep a simple damage lane; save specialist counters for Ra, Explorer, and Camel groups.

Conehead Mummy game art
Medium threat

Conehead Mummy

Ancient Egypt

A mummified walker protected by a cobra-style cone.

Counter: Piercing attacks gain value when the cone arrives inside a larger mummy wave.

Buckethead Mummy game art
High threat

Buckethead Mummy

Ancient Egypt

A durable Egypt lane tank carrying sandy bucket armor.

Counter: Do not let the bucket hide a dangerous special behind it; slow or stall the group while damage stacks.

Ra Zombie game art
High threat

Ra Zombie

Ancient Egypt

Attempts to take sun from the board, directly attacking your economy.

Counter: Prioritize the lane quickly. Losing sun can delay the very plant you intended to use as the answer.

Explorer Zombie game art
High threat

Explorer Zombie

Ancient Egypt

Carries a flame capable of removing plants on contact.

Counter: Extinguish or freeze the torch before it reaches an expensive formation; Iceberg Lettuce is a zero-sun emergency option.

Torchlight Zombie game art
High threat

Torchlight Zombie

Ancient Egypt

A tougher Explorer variant whose torch can destroy plants and scorch tiles.

Counter: Treat it as a priority target. Stack control and ranged damage rather than feeding it replacement plants.

Camel Zombies game art
Medium threat

Camel Zombies

Ancient Egypt

A linked formation that enters in step with other Camel segments.

Counter: Piercing and multi-hit lane attacks work better than repeatedly breaking the formation one target at a time.

Imp Mummy game art
High threat

Imp Mummy

Ancient Egypt

Can be thrown beyond much of the front line and continue from inside your formation.

Counter: Keep a cheap rear answer or a plant that can attack behind itself; Bonk Choy can cover both adjacent sides.

Mummified Gargantuar game art
High threat

Mummified Gargantuar

Ancient Egypt

A massive Egypt bruiser with enough durability to cross an underbuilt lane.

Counter: Layer slow, burst, and a sacrificial stall. Plan for the thrown Imp rather than spending every tool at the front.

Zombot Sphinx-inator game art
Boss threat

Zombot Sphinx-inator

Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt's Zomboss machine changes the fight from a normal lane wave into a scripted boss encounter.

Counter: Read the level's supplied plants and telegraphs. Preserve Plant Food for pressure spikes instead of using it on routine summons.

Pirate Captain Zombie game art
High threat

Pirate Captain Zombie

Pirate Seas

Commands a parrot that can carry a plant away and then return.

Counter: Remove the captain or parrot before it takes a high-cost anchor plant; keep replaceable plants in exposed positions.

Target priority

Danger is a verb.

Ra steals sun. Explorer burns a plant. Camel formations compress several targets into one lane. An Imp bypasses the front. Pirate Captain sends a parrot for an anchor plant. Name the verb, then hold the smallest counter that interrupts it.

Armor still matters, but it often protects the special behind it. Piercing, control, and focused burst keep a Buckethead from becoming cover for the real threat.

Plan a counter-ready deck

Ancient Egypt priority ladder

Protect economy from Ra, extinguish or freeze Explorer and Torchlight, use piercing against Camel groups, then spend sustained damage on armored mummies. A Mummified Gargantuar needs layered slow and burst, plus a rear plan for its Imp.

Why threat labels are editorial

Names and behaviors come from project data. The Low, Medium, High, and Boss labels are this field guide’s practical reading of how much a zombie can disrupt an ordinary formation. Level modifiers and supplied plants can change that priority.

Gardendless publishes hundreds of zombie feature entries, including holiday and world variants. A card for every internal object would be thin and hard to use, so this page focuses on the interactions that teach a reusable counter.
