PvZ2 Gardendless Difficulty and Deck Planning

Difficulty should create readable decisions. This guide turns the older A–D labels into a practical way to tune economy, control, and recovery.

01

Read the current in-game difficulty description

The project’s English FAQ documents four settings, A through D, with A hardest and D easiest. That page also says its answers are valid through 0.7.x, while the current release is 0.12.x. Use the A–D ordering as historical orientation and let the description inside your current build settle the final choice.

A useful difficulty is one where a mistake costs resources or a mower but still teaches why the lane failed. If the opening wave ends the level before you can establish economy, lower the setting and learn the plant and zombie interactions first. Raising it later preserves the challenge without turning every retry into guesswork.

02

Give every deck five jobs

A coherent seed tray covers economy, sustained damage, control, burst, and stall. One plant can fill two jobs: Goo Peashooter damages and slows; Torchwood supports pea damage and has defensive toughness; Potato Mine is both early burst and an economy enabler because it buys time for Sunflowers.

Avoid filling every slot with expensive damage. That deck looks powerful in the chooser but fails when the first armored zombie arrives before the sun engine. Likewise, a tray full of clever control can delay a wave without ever clearing it.

  • Economy: Sunflower or another reliable sun source.
  • Sustained damage: Peashooter, Repeater, Bloomerang, or a world-specific equivalent.
  • Control: Iceberg Lettuce, slow, or knockback.
  • Burst: Potato Mine, Plant Food plan, or another immediate finisher.
  • Stall: Wall-nut, Mirror-nut, or a cheap disposable plant.
03

Plan for the dangerous action, not the largest body

Target order is mechanical. Ra Zombie threatens sun. Explorer and Torchlight threaten plants and tiles. A Pirate Captain’s parrot can remove an expensive anchor. Camel Zombies punish single-target tunnel vision. A Gargantuar threatens the front and can introduce an Imp behind it.

Before the final wave, ask which action your formation cannot absorb. Hold the matching counter. An Iceberg Lettuce used on a basic mummy is unavailable when a lit torch enters. A blocker planted too late may protect nothing because the special action already fired.

04

Use lane geometry

Place straight shooters where they can fire for the longest time. Put blockers forward enough to create a firing window but not so far that unsupported plants occupy the danger zone. Bonk Choy can attack both adjacent sides, making it useful against thrown Imps if positioned with intention. Bloomerang improves when several enemies share a lane.

Board-wide or multi-directional plants such as Shooting Starfruit ask a different question: can the economy survive their 500-sun cost, and will several directions actually contain targets? A card’s theoretical coverage does not matter if buying it leaves four lanes unfinished.

05

Diagnose a loss in one sentence

After a failed level, name the first irreversible event: “Ra stole the sun that funded my Buckethead answer,” “Explorer burned the only damage plant,” or “the Imp landed behind a one-direction formation.” That sentence identifies a deck, timing, or placement change.

Change one variable on the next attempt. Add control, move one column, delay an upgrade, or lower difficulty. Rebuilding the entire tray after every loss hides the lesson and makes success difficult to reproduce.

Clean test loop

Keep the same core deck for two attempts and change only the answer to the first failure point.

06

Questions players ask

Is difficulty A the easiest?

The project’s older FAQ says the opposite: A hardest, D easiest. Because that note covers 0.7.x, read the current in-game text too.

What should every beginner deck include?

An economy plant, dependable lane damage, control, an immediate burst answer, and a way to stall.

When should I use Plant Food?

Hold it for the pressure spike or dangerous special action your normal formation cannot absorb, rather than spending it on routine walkers.
